FACT: Our bowel motions are getting rid of unwanted body waste.
It stands to reason then, that if faeces is sitting in the bowel for days at a time, as a result of constipation, unwanted toxins and waste will be reabsorbed into the body.
Constipation causes changes to;
- the bowel flora (good bacteria);
- the permeability of the bowel wall;
- the body’s immune response.
How Is Immunity Affected By The Gut?
We know that there is a gut/skin connection.
In fact we know that around 70% of the immune cells reside in the gut. Intestinal permeability is also linked to skin problems such as eczema.
Intestinal permeability is sometimes known as “leaky gut syndrome” and refers to a situation where the integrity of the gut wall has been compromised. As a result particles of food reabsorb through the damaged gut wall and end up circulating in the blood stream. This triggers an immune reaction.
Remember that gluten damages the gut wall.
