How Does Constipation Effect the Skins Appearance?

How Does a Healthy Body Eliminate Waste?

There are 4 excretory organs in the body that help to get rid of waste. They are:

  1. the kidney and urinary system
  2. the bowel and digestive system
  3. the lung and respiratory system
  4. the skin.

If any of the first 3 system are not working effectively the skin will be overloaded and skin problems may develop.

Constipation and abnormal levels of good and bad bacteria in the gut are closely related to skin problems.

Put simply, your skin is a reflection of your inner health.

FACT: Our bowel motions are getting rid of unwanted body waste.

Menstrual painIt stands to reason then, that if faeces is sitting in the bowel for days at a time, as a result of constipation, unwanted toxins and waste will be reabsorbed into the body.

Constipation causes changes to;

  • the bowel flora (good bacteria);
  • the permeability of the bowel wall;
  • the body’s immune response.

How Is Immunity Affected By The Gut?

We know that there is a gut/skin connection.

In fact we know that around 70% of the immune cells reside in the gut. Intestinal permeability is also linked to skin problems such as eczema.

Intestinal permeability is sometimes known as “leaky gut syndrome” and refers to a situation where the integrity of the gut wall has been compromised. As a result particles of food reabsorb through the damaged gut wall and end up circulating in the blood stream. This triggers an immune reaction.

Remember that gluten damages the gut wall.

Gut Problems Are Linked To Skin Disease

Inflammatory diseases of the gut are often linked to skin changes. For example many people with gut problems will develop cutaneous lesions. Cutaneous lesions are skin areas that are darkly pigmented in colour, thickened and with a different texture.

14% of ulcerative colitis sufferers and 24% of people with Crohn’s disease have these lesions. 25% of people with coeliac disease have dermatitis herpetiformis. Psoriasis is also found more frequently in people with Crohn’s disease.

Gut toxicity is very frequently found in people with skin issues. Gut toxicity can be measured via a Urinary Indicans Test. A positive results indicates abnormal levels of bad bacteria in the gut.

What is “normal” bowel function?

The normal bowel motion should be a darkish brown in colour. Think of a very overripe banana and you have an idea of the consistency, shape and how formed  it should be. The recommended regularity is 1 to 3 times daily.
