#Skin Tip 12 Use Products with Moisturizing Emollients and Natural Moisturizing Factors.
Use Moisturizers with Good Emollients and Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF).
Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) refers to different substances that draw water into the skin from the environment.
NMF is naturally found in the skin – in fact it makes up 20% to 30% of the dry weight of the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the epidermis).
NMF is made up primarily of amino acids (40%). It also contains 12% of both sodium PCA and lactate. Urea, ions, sugars and some minor components make up the remaining 34%
The components of NMF therefore help maintain a healthy and moist outer skin layer. They also prevent or decrease cracking, scaling, flaking and tightness of the skin.
When the amino acids (proteins) interact with other skin components, NMF also improves the skins elasticity and skin barrier.
