How to Slow Down the Ageing of Your Skin.

The loss of our youthful appearance is the result of several different changes that are occurring within the body and the skin.  

A loss of that youthful appearance will be much more rapid for some people and often goes hand in hand with lifestyle choices.

But the good news is, most of these changes can be slowed by diet and lifestyle habits.

What Happens When The Skin Ages?

  • a thickening of the stratum corneum (the outer most layer of the skin);
  • loss of dermal (inner layer) thickness;
  • dehydration;
  • the disorganization and loss of shape of skin cells;
  • collagen and elastin fibers become damaged and weak;
  • uneven distribution of melalin results in age spots.

This compares to healthy skin where:

  • the stratum corneum is thin;
  • the skin is hydrated;
  • there are lots of new, plump skin cells;
  • melalin is distributed evenly;
  • the supporting skin structure is strong and resilient.

The loss of skin thickness goes hand in hand with the the shortening of our telomeres.

Telemores are the ends of chromosomes and telomere shortening is an indicator of ageing. There are some interesting factors that affect our telomere length and therefore the aging of our skin.

Sun Exposure – is it harmful or helpful?

Whether sun exposure is helpful or harmful to our health is an ongoing debate between the slip/slop/slap sunscreen sector and the need for healthy vitamin D conversion enthusiasts.

This is an argument which will go on for some time, as there are many economic factors associated with keeping us covered in sun screen.

Does UV radiation induce skin breakdown?  Yes it does. Does excess sun exposure deplete antioxidants?  Yes it does. Is sun exposure good for our Vitamin D production and therefore beneficial to our skin and health?  Yes it is.

We will delve into this issue a little bit deeper in another Skin Tip. But in the meantime, remember that some sun exposure is important, but you should avoid a lengthy time in the sun and protect delicate areas such as the face.

And to combat any damage done via free radical damage it is really important to use skin care products with antioxidants such as Kakadu Plum which has powerful levels of vitamin C or Mountain Pepper Leaf extract which has astounding antioxidant properties.

  What Can I Do Today To Curb Premature Skin Ageing?

  • Avoid the use of cortisol – topical or oral. There are multiple natural anti-inflammatories available and one of the best is curcumin from turmeric.

  • Ensure you are getting adequate antioxidants. Eating a fresh food diet will substantially help with this. Green tea and brewed coffee are a great source of antioxidants also. Kambucha tea is another good source of antioxidants that you can brew at home. There are also some fabulous supplements available such as NRF2 activators and Resveratrol that are known to boost antioxidants and slow free radical damage substantially.

  • Control inflammation (the fire within) wherever it is occurring in the body. Remember the more overweight you are the more inflamed your body will be. I recommend turmeric as a good anti-inflammatory. It is excellent for all acute and chronic injuries or inflammatory health problems.
